Moving Home with Pets
Moving to a new home is a big transition — not just for you, but for your pets too. Whether you have a curious cat, an anxious dog, a chatty parrot, or a tiny hamster, changes in environment, smells, and routine can make the process stressful for them. At Parrocat Move, we understand that pets are family, and we’re here to help make the journey smoother for everyone — paws, wings, and tails included.
1. Prepare a Pet-Friendly Game Plan
Start planning early:
·- Decide whether your pet will stay with you during the move, or with a sitter or friend.
·- If you’re hiring movers (like us), let us know you have pets — we can plan the day to avoid startling them.
·- If your pet is easily stressed, consider consulting your vet about calming techniques or medication.
2. Keep Routine As Normal As Possible
Pets thrive on routine. In the days before and after the move:
·- Feed and walk them at the usual time
·- Keep their bed, toys, and feeding area in place as long as possible
·- Avoid introducing new food, treats, or major changes
3. Pack a Pet Essentials Bag
On moving day, have a separate bag or box for your pet with:
·- Food and water
·- Bowls
·- Leash or carrier
·- Treats
·- Waste bags or litter
·- A favorite toy or blanket
·- Any medication they need
Tip: Keep this bag in your car or by your side — not in the moving truck.
4. Create a “Safe Room” During the Move
Pets may get scared by unfamiliar people and noises. Before the movers arrive:
·- Set up a quiet, enclosed space (like a bedroom or bathroom)
·- Add food, water, bedding, and toys
·- Keep the door closed and mark it with a sign like “Pet Inside – Do Not Open”
Alternatively, you can drop your pet off with someone they know and trust for the day.
5. Transport Your Pet Comfortably
·- Use a well-ventilated carrier for cats, small dogs, and birds
·- Keep pets in the car with you during the move (never in the moving truck)
·- On long drives, stop for water and bathroom breaks
6. Let Them Explore the New Home Slowly
Once you arrive:
·- Set up a safe corner with familiar items before letting them roam
·- For cats and birds, introduce one room at a time
·- For dogs, leash-walk them through the space first
·- Keep routines steady for the first few days
7. Update Their Info
·- Update your address on your pet’s collar tag and microchip
·- Inform your vet about the new location
·- Re-register with a local vet if you’ve moved far
