Moving on a Rainy Day
Rain can make moving feel like a bigger challenge than it needs to be. But with the right preparation and a little flexibility, a rainy day doesn’t have to ruin your move. Here are some simple, helpful tips to keep things dry, safe, and on track.
1. Protect Your Boxes
Use plastic bins if possible. If you're using cardboard boxes, wrap them in plastic bags or stretch wrap to prevent them from getting soggy and collapsing.
2. Cover Furniture and Mattresses
Use plastic sheeting, tarps, or moving blankets with waterproof layers to keep your furniture and mattresses dry during transport.
3. Watch Your Floors
Rain brings mud and moisture indoors. Place towels, mats, or cardboard at entryways to reduce slipping and protect your floors from water damage.
4. Dress for the Weather
Wear raincoats and non-slip shoes to stay comfortable and safe while moving in wet conditions.
5. Plan the Route
Make sure there’s a clear, shortest path between your door and the moving vehicle. The less time your belongings spend in the rain, the better.
6. Have Towels and Dry Cloths Ready
Keep a few towels nearby to quickly wipe down wet items and surfaces as needed.
7. Keep Electronics and Essentials Dry
Pack phones, chargers, documents, and electronics in waterproof bags or keep them with you in a dry area.
8. Be Flexible
If weather conditions are too severe, check with your moving company about the option to reschedule safely.
Moving in the rain isn’t ideal, but it’s manageable. With a little extra care and planning, you can keep your move on track — and your belongings dry.
